本书分为上下两卷，上卷为中国古代经济思想史论文集，下卷为西方经济思想史论文集。在上卷中除两篇关于西汉时期和近代的经济思想外，其余均为对先秦时期中国经济思想的研究和探索。作者在书中对中国古代若干重要经济思想进行了系统综合地研究和思索。相信本书会为人们思考当下中国的经济问题提供有益的启示。
下卷为西方经济学的若干专题研究，在这些专题研究中贯穿着作者的一个基本观点：完全自由竞争的市场原教旨主义经济学已经不适合今天的世界与中国，只有实现有效的市场和有为的政府相结合，才能保证现代经济的良好运行。
