美国汉学家艾朗诺（Ronald C.Egan，1948—）是海外宋代文学文化研究的一位权威学者，在研究与翻译领域均有突出建树。本书即以艾朗诺为研究对象，围绕艾氏的代表作《欧阳修的文学作品》、《苏轼的言、象、行》、《美的焦虑》以及《才女之累》等成果展开细读、评述和阐释，对其在宋代诗学、士大夫文化以及审美文化层面展开的学术研究以及他对《管锥编》英文选译本的翻译活动等展开集中探讨和分析。通过细致的梳理，把艾氏研究中的学理性要素提炼出来，在此基础上将之纳入不同的专题论证之中。以此一方面审视艾朗诺汉学研究与翻译实践的得失及其特色，另一方面则借助不同文化语境的对话来进一步推进北宋的文学文化研究。
