本书采用文献法、田野法、考证法、案例法等研究方法，重点梳理了历代地理志和地方志中的相关记载，在此基础上参考古诗词、文集和前人研究成果，专门就湖北三国历史地名和文化遗存进行系统整理和考论。如对史学界长期存在争议的“赤壁”等地名地望进行了深入探讨。从民俗学、文化学的视角对一些地名的缘起、文化遗存的由来及衍变进行了考察。
