本书从学术史的视角，深描了新中国成立后六十年来中国美学发展的整体历程与逻辑进展，对“美学学术史”进行了系统化的总结与反思，从而将当代中国的“前三十年”（1949-1978）与“后三十多年”（1979年至今）美学史融贯起来。作者以“美的本质观”、“美学本体论”、“美学原理”、“中西美学史”的研究作为重点，全面深入到美学的各个领域，对当代中国美学发展的历史经验与现实教训加以客观陈述与解析，试图由此为中国美学的未来发展奠定坚实的学术史基础。
