本书以经学、子学与文学为研究对象，范围虽广，但精神贯一，倚重于文献而展开讨论。全书分经学编、子学编和文学编三个部分。经学编侧重易学和东汉经学家马融的研究，亦及于礼学，有理论探究，也有研读文本中的考释。子学编以庄子和文中子为重点而兼及其当今的“新子学”思潮。文学编中以天文星象为特色，考察了《诗经》与杜甫的诗歌，角度新颖。全书立足文献，实事求是，偏重考稽，小心求证，在此基础上融经、子、文学为一体，对国学与文学的研究多有启迪。
