本书从编选者、编选背景及过程、选录作家及作品、评点、刊刻、流传、影响等方面入手对清人所编文章选本进行文献梳理，力求把握其整体面貌，揭示其文献价值。在此基础上，结合清代社会的政治、文化、科举、教育、学术思想、文学创作、文学思潮等因素，对选本进行文学批评研究，探讨和发掘其理论价值。采用文献与文学批评相结合的研究方法，立足于选本文献的搜求、整理，从多种视角探求选本的文学批评意义，是本书的特点和价值所在。
