从20世纪90年代的沉潜写作逐渐演变为喧嚣热闹，新世纪中国诗歌已然走过十年历程，并表现出与以往时代不同的新质，不仅有外部数不胜数的诗歌活动、诗坛论争及非诗化事件的合力作用，使得新世纪诗歌表现出诸多“复兴”的迹象，更有诗歌内部伦理关怀的提升、多元化诗学的建构以及诗歌技艺的综合调适。本书试图从新世纪诗歌的诸般现象入手，归纳、总结当下诗歌的基本特征，探索诗歌发展演变的内在规律，为当下诗歌的繁荣发展提供历史的经验教训与启迪。

绪论部分首先梳理了新世纪诗歌外部以消费为中心的经济语境、以狂欢化为特征的文化语境与以多元化为旨归的文学语境等问题，为研究当下诗歌的发展衍进历程提供不可忽略的背景元素。其次指认新世纪诗歌的总体特征，即先锋性的延续、现实性的深化与抒情性的传承。最后对新世纪诗歌研究现状进行细致而理性的分析，并确立了本书的写作目的与创新点。
