本书以民国国立大学理想本位—现实本位—实践本位学科价值取向发展演变的三个历史时期为经，以“学科知识—学科制度—学科文化”为纬，动态研究民国国立大学学科价值取向的形成、演化过程和演化的影响因素，追寻其实践效果，并探讨造成学科发展价值理想与实施现状的差距，揭示不同价值取向下学科的真实形态以及构筑这种形态的具体的政治、经济、社会、文化背景，以为当前研究型大学学科建设提供历史借鉴和现实参照。
