本书以佛学中的重要概念“如来藏”为核心疏析了《楞严经》的义理，认为该经以“本觉”、“显现”和“不二”三个递进的层面阐释了契入如来藏——佛的果地智德的过程，并据此创见性地将如来藏所涉及的种种含义归结为两种：从万法本性而说的基础义和从万法本身而说的完整义，前者可名之真心如来藏，后者可名之法界如来藏。两种如来藏的区分可以回应近世以来的有关争论，并且对理解如来藏思想如何融摄中观与瑜伽行、《楞严经》如何沟通显密等问题有所助益。
