本书是迄今为止国内关于北宋著名诗人和有进步倾向的文学家王禹偁事迹及作品编年的第一部研究专著，具有较高的学术水平。本书按年月编排了王禹偁事迹及有关当代大事，纠正了史籍上许多记载错误；考定了王禹偁几乎全部著作的写作年代；钩沉和著录了王禹偁的许多散佚诗文，并对《小畜外集》内误收的诗歌进行了考证；补正了文集内的脱漏及刊误字句，包括影印宋本及王禹偁本人的误引原文；评述了王禹偁在历史上的地位。
