本书选取入清以来西方来华汉学家的六种代表性汉语语法著作为切入点，按照时间的先后顺序，分别考察其中的汉语语法体系和汉语观，探讨不同国别的西方人研究汉语的不同视角，并分析这些研究的共性和个性。帮助读者认识传教士汉学家汉语语法研究的特点，思考这些研究与19世纪以来中国本土研究的互动关系。
