先秦时期，淮河流域不仅有灿烂的史前文明，而且有自己独立发展的文化体系，这种文化体系一方面持续地吸纳周边文化的精华而得到充实、发展，同时又对其他文化序列产生重大影响。可以说，先秦淮河流域地区既是一个文化产生、发展的重要区域，也是一个多文化融合的重要区域。本书借助传世的文献资料和考古发现，重点研究淮河流域在先秦时期各个阶段族群的族源、分布、生存、迁徙、演化与融合过程，在此基础上进一步探讨先秦时期这一区域的历史文化特征及其在中华文化形成过程中的重要地位。
