本书以现代诗歌文本呈现的“时间观”为依据，辨识出中国新诗“时间抒写”的多重取向，在此基础上解释新诗历史发展的内在逻辑与动因。在作者涉猎大量理论与诗歌文本的基础上，本书提炼出新诗的若干时间主题，对新诗的时间意象进行详细阐释，对何其芳、穆旦、洛夫、欧阳江河等个案展开深度剖析。本书旨在阐明中国新诗与现代时间观念的深层互动关系，以及新诗在这一过程中对生存现状的体认、表达和对生存困境的诗意洞察，为考察中国新诗史提供新的视野与方法，进而总结出富有启发性的历史经验与艺术法则。
