本书在综合概括牧歌概念的基础上，梳理中西文学批评视野中的牧歌研究，分析古希腊牧歌的原创价值和古罗马牧歌的经典意义，阐述西方牧歌的流变与发展、继承与创新。本书指出，牧歌具有敬畏自然天道、依赖人情伦理、追求主静心性等方面的哲理内涵，以及诗性写意和世俗写实的双重性质。牧歌确立起与史诗、悲剧截然不同的文学传统，在西方文学史上具有重要意义。
