本论著对一百多年的北美华文文学进行时间和空间上的贯通性研究，通过对海外华文文学特定区域的北美华文小说的文本分析，来揭示近代以来中国现代化过程中的文化命运以及中国在现代化演进过程中传统文化与西方文化之问的互动关系。鉴于北美华文文学的丰富性、复杂性、多变性，本论著从后殖民主义的角度考察文化认同、混杂、跨界、流亡离散、城市意识乃至与其交织在一起的性别研究和文化研究，通过研究北美华文文学来阐释其主要的文化特征，以及现代中国的文化进程与发展趋势，进而思考人类文化的整体命运。
This treatise for the more than one hundred years of the north American Chinese literature through research on the time and space, through to the overseas Chinese literature of certain areas of the North America Chinese novel text analysis, to reveal the modern cultural destiny in the process of Chinese modernization and Chinese traditional culture and western culture in the process of evolution of modernization of q. Given the richness, complexity and variability of the north American Chinese literature after the works from the perspective of colonialism mixed cultural identity, exiled, crossover, discrete, urban consciousness and intertwined with gender studies and cultural studies, by studying the north American Chinese literature to illustrate the main cultural characteristics, as well as the culture process and trend of development of modern China, and then think about the whole fate of human culture.
