《世界民族学史》就世界民族学的发展史构画出一幅脉络和轮廓，这在中国学术界尚属首次实践。为了帮助学生和广大读者开拓视野，把握这门古老而又年轻学科的转机，我们应该立足于民族学的现代化，放眼世界，放眼未来，虔诚地艰辛地去探索、去研究，“必须以保卫和增进那些作为传统研究对象的民族的利益为目的”，才是民族学的真正的光明前途。基于此，作者运用马克思主义的民族学思想，对过去的民族学思想进行了梳理，对当前流行的一些民族学理论进行了鉴别和批评，为当前的世界民族学史撰写了一本高校教科书性质的专著。
The History of World Ethnology draws a context and outline of the history of the development of world ethnology, which is the first practice in Chinese academic circles. In order to help students and readers broaden their horizons and grasp the transformation of this ancient and young discipline, we should base ourselves on the modernization of ethnology, look to the world and the future, and devoutly explore and study hard for the purpose of protecting and promoting the interests of the nationalities as the subject of traditional research to make the true bright future of ethnology come true. For this reason, the author uses Marxist ethnological thoughts to sort out the past ethnological thoughts, identify and criticize some popular ethnological theories, and write a monograph as a college textbook on the history of current world ethnology.
