幻想故事的文体特征是相对于“写实性”而言的“非现实性”。文体的“非现实性”和内容的“幻想性”相呼应。二者均是幻想故事的“幻想”所在，共同为幻想故事提供被称之为幻想故事的依据。假如我们主张幻想故事具有独特的文体特征，那么随之而来的问题便是：幻想故事为什么会存在这种文体特征？本书基于民间童话样式理论，把传承人特定的心理需求视为形成特定文体的首要因素。与此同时，本书也并不否认口头传承的技术性需要对文体所产生的影响，认为正是因为某种来自传承人特定心理需求的文体，同时又符合口头叙述的实际需要，幻想故事作为口头传统，才能够具有如此旺盛的生命力，并且在如此漫长的时间里深受传承人的喜爱。
The stylistic characteristics of fantasy stories are "unrealistic" relative to "realism". The "unreality" of the style echoes the "fantasy" of the content.
