本书围绕农民专业合作社发展的条件和机制展开，共分三编十章。作者从社会学视角切入，主要从宏观层面（农民专业合作社发展的背景与动力）、中观层面（农村的阶层分化、土地流转等现实）、微观层面（农民的合作意识与合作行为）展开分析，在此基础上对我国合作社未来的发展方向进行了预测和展望。作者认为，国家力量、城乡资本与新乡建派是合作社发展的三重动力，而未来我国合作社发展可能有多种方向。小农户之间的联合、政府扶持与内生合作以及家庭农场加合作社都可能是未来的发展趋势之一。
The book focuses on the conditions and mechanisms for the development of farmers' professional cooperatives, and is divided into three parts and ten chapters. From the sociological perspective, the author mainly analyzes from the macro level (the background and driving force of the development of farmers' professional cooperatives), the meso level (the reality of rural class differentiation, land circulation, etc.), and the micro level (farmers' cooperative consciousness and cooperative behavior), and predicts and prospects the future development direction of China's cooperatives on this basis. The author believes that national strength, urban and rural capital and new rural construction are the triple driving forces for the development of cooperatives, and the development of cooperatives in China may have many directions in the future.
