杨秀峰同志“七七”事变前在北平教育界、文化界上层从事统一战线工作。抗日战争中先后任冀西抗日游击队司令等职。1948年任华北人民政府副主席。建国后，高等教育部部长、最高人民法院院长等职。“文革”后，任第五届全国政协副主席。他谢绝了职务安排，成为主动退下来的老同志的典范，中共十二大主席团为此向他发了致敬电。2007年董必武法学思想研究会召开诞辰110周年，将与会的讲话、发言，一些老同志的会议并杨秀峰年谱收集于一书，定名为《人民公仆杨秀峰》，出版发行，为怀念杨秀峰为中国人民的解放事业，为共和国的法制建设与教育事业做出的巨大的贡献。讴歌他的革命精神、他的高风亮节的情怀，用以宣传老一辈革命家的精神和高贵品质。
