本书考察了明清之际的江南遗民画家群体，从学术、政治、地域、文化等方面对这个群体的内心世界做了深入研究，揭示出解读遗民画的三条路径：造型语言、笔墨痕迹、使用符号，分析了遗民画的构图与政治生态的关系、遗民画家和正统画家关于“气”与“理”之争、遗民画家的符号意识与身份认同、遗民画家与遗民画同江南地域文化的关系等问题。
