在西方社会的现代性发展中，“个体化”是不容忽视的社会现象。它在为西方现代社会的建构做出贡献的同时，也对社会共同体价值构成了挑战，并且有可能使稳定社会步入“风险社会”。改革开放以来，中国社会的个体在与国家的互动中逐步成长，加速了中国现代化发展的进程。然而，个体本身的“先天不足”，导致了“无公德公民”现象的存在。应对个体发展的现代之殇，需要在个体与共同体之间寻找一种平衡，培育以公共性为价值核心的公民精神。本书认为，当代中国公民应当具有价值理性精神、集体主义精神、公共参与精神及平等合作精神。
In the development of modernity in Western society, "individualization" is a social phenomenon that cannot be ignored. While contributing to the construction of modern Western society, it also poses a challenge to the value of social community, and has the potential to transform stable society into a "risk society." Since the reform and opening up, individuals in Chinese society have gradually grown in interaction with the state, accelerating the process of China's modernization and development.
