“佛事文学”指的是在佛事上应用的具有浓郁文学色彩的言辞与歌辞，本书主要从发展史的角度进行研究，分作佛事表白文学与音乐文学两编。
佛事表白文学，两晋南北朝时代，其名“唱导”，本书的研究以辩名求实为主；唐代，以对敦煌文献文本分析为主；宋代，出现新的种类——小佛事文，研究以此为重点。
佛事音乐文学种类繁多而代有增损，汉晋之世，传说众多，问题在于正读；晋隋时代，异彩纷呈而文本甚少，重点在性质与影响；唐宋时期，法曲子产生，主要探讨其与曲子词的关系。又，俗讲与唱导无关，与科仪有关，研究以比较分析为主。
