本书以国内外研究比较薄弱的禅录（灯录）句式为对象，初次建构唐宋时期的禅录句式体系，着重运用构式语法理论和语法化理论对其中若干句式做出全面的分析，不仅结合语篇、语境探究禅录句式的语用意义，突破了禅宗语言研究单向度考察的局限，而且在佛禅文献与世俗文献之间进行内部与外部比较，追溯其源流，探讨其演变轨迹，寻找禅录语言与佛经文献语言以及后世文学之间的联系，提出了“同源句”概念，丰富历史语言学研究的内容。
