本书运用历史政治地理圈层结构理论，论证中国古代在边疆民族地区设置的羁縻府州、土官土司政区不仅是中国古代的民族自治区，也是国家边缘区圈层。全书分四章。第一章阐述了历史政治地理圈层结构理论的基本观点。第二章以唐宋西域、西南地区几处羁縻府州建置沿革为例，还原了民族自治政区的形成过程。第三章以唐、宋、元、明、清云贵高原及其周边地区从羁縻府州建置到土官土司建置的演变为例，证明古代边疆民族自治政区始终作为国家政治地理边缘圈层而存在的历史事实。第四章从地名学、历史地理学、民族学及社会文化等方面考察了川滇民族走廊及其附近地区羌、夷、蛮、獠诸族群的历史渊源及其发展演变，从一个侧面反映多民族国家实行多轨行政的必要性。

This book uses the theory of historical and political geographical circle structure to demonstrate that the prefectures and Tuguan Tusi administrative districts set up in border ethnic areas in ancient China were not only ethnic autonomous regions in ancient China, but also the border areas of the state. The book is divided into four chapters. The first chapter expounds the basic ideas of the theory of historical political geographical structure. The second chapter takes the history of the establishment of several prefectures in the western and southwestern regions of the Tang and Song dynasties as an example, and restores the formation process of ethnic autonomous political regions. Chapter 3 takes the evolution of the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qingyun-Guizhou plateaus and its surrounding areas from the establishment of Jiaofu Prefecture to the Tuguan Tusi as an example, to prove the historical fact that ancient frontier ethnic autonomous regions have always existed as the marginal circle of national political geography. Chapter 4 examines the historical origin and development and evolution of the Qiang, Yi, Barbarian and Fang ethnic groups in the Sichuan-Yunnan Ethnic Corridor and its vicinity from the aspects of toponymy, historical geography, ethnology and social culture, and reflects the necessity of multi-track administration in a multi-ethnic country.（AI翻译）
