自20世纪上半叶芝加哥学派开启边缘性研究以来，对边缘性的研究逐渐分化，形成了两大取向，即偏重外在结构性排斥的边缘情境取向与偏重内在边缘人格变化的边缘心理取向，并普遍认为个体的社会边缘化遵循“从结构到心理”的常规路径。本书借助从既有研究中析出的“结构边缘”与“心理边缘”这一对概念工具，通过对中国失独者因生活情境的剧烈变动，在强烈的自我意识中主动建构并逐渐封闭形成边缘人格，进而演化出从“心死”到“孤老”的结构边缘化三阶段进程的分析，认为个体社会边缘化还存在非常规的“心理—结构”路径，并据此构建了个体社会边缘化的双重路径理论模型。

Since the Chicago School began marginal research in the first half of the 20th century, the study of marginality has gradually diverged, forming two major orientations, namely, the marginal situational orientation that focuses on external structural exclusion and the marginal psychological orientation that focuses on internal marginal personality changes, and it is generally believed that the social marginalization of individuals follows the conventional path of "from structure to psychology". With the help of the pair of conceptual tools of "structural edge" and "psychological edge" extracted from existing research, this book actively constructs and gradually closes the formation of marginal personality in a strong self-consciousness through the drastic changes in the life situation of Chinese lonely people, and then evolves the three-stage process of structural marginalization from "mental death" to "lonely old age", arguing that there are still unconventional "psycho-structure" paths for individual social marginalization, and constructing a dual-path theoretical model of individual social marginalization accordingly.（AI翻译）
