林存阳所著的《乾嘉四大幕府研究/历史考古研究系列/中国社会科学院文库》以乾隆初叶至道光初叶近百年问四个具有典型性、关联性的幕府(即卢见曾、朱筠、毕沅、阮元幕府)为研究对象，采用学术史与政治史、社会史相结合的方法，对四大幕府的学术宗向、学术活动、学术成就，以及与清中期学术演进之间的关联，做了较系统、全面的梳理、剖析和揭示。 本研究认为．相较于清初、晚清甚至清朝以前的幕府，“乾嘉四大幕府”的独特性，乃在于其体现出的“学术性”及文化功能，尤其是对经史之学的张扬和对“新经学”的塑造，这在很大程度上正彰显了乾嘉学派与乾嘉学术兴起、发展、兴盛、趋于衰微的历程。在“乾嘉四大幕府”的持续推动下，清初以来“以经学济理学之穷”的学术潮流遂得到深化，并达到新的高度。
