本书对中国“自由”概念的渊源与流变进行了梳理。鸦片战争以后，来华传教士和中国知识分子受佛教影响，以“自由”对译西方的liberty或者freedom，从而引发思想争论。其中维新派竭力将其纳入儒家语境，从克制情欲角度理解“自由”；革命派则从摆脱君主政治束缚、人民当家做主的角度理解“自由”。近代中国的“自由”内涵仍是传统的，这种“自由”只重视破除外在束缚，而缺乏对法律、秩序和国家的服从，容易陷入再度遭批判的困境。

This book examines the origins and fluidity of the concept of "freedom" in China. After the Opium War, missionaries and Chinese intellectuals in China were influenced by Buddhism to translate Western liberty or freedom with "freedom", which led to ideological debate. Among them, the Restoration school tried to put it in the Confucian context, understanding "freedom" from the perspective of restraining lust; Revolutionaries understood "freedom" in terms of freeing themselves from the shackles of monarchy and the people being masters of their own affairs. The connotation of "freedom" in modern China is still traditional, and this "freedom" only attaches importance to breaking the shackles of exclusion, and lacks obedience to law, order and the state, and is prone to fall into the dilemma of being criticized again.（AI翻译）
