本书是一部断代区域灾害史方面的学术专著，主要研究清代宁夏地区自然灾害情形及社会对灾害的应对等问题。宁夏回族自治区地处我国西北内陆，地形、气候条件复杂。清代是这一地区自然灾害频发的一个时期，干旱、水涝、地震等诸种灾害，造成了大量的人员伤亡和财产损失。人们在遭受各种自然灾害袭扰的同时，也在不断总结和积累防灾、备灾和救灾的经验教训，以最大限度减轻灾害带来的损失。
