“美国社会主义例外论”研究已经存在了一个多世纪，吸引了国内外众多学者的关注。迄今为止，在民族国家史的研究视野下，学者们几乎已经穷尽所有可能的解释。近几十年的研究表明，新的进展有望通过研究方法的调整而取得。本书是在既有研究的基础上，探讨全球史视野下的新解释途径的一种努力。本书考查了美国社会主义的相关史实，详细论述了美国社会主义赖以存在的社会历史条件，对美国社会主义运动未能成功的原因提出了尝试性的解释。本书从世界体系、美国社会和社会主义运动三个层次上展开分析，在适当的地方将美国与发达资本主义国家进行了比较。本书认为，美国社会主义运动与西欧相比，表面上似乎是一个“例外”，实质上反映出20世纪发达资本主义国家中社会主义运动的某种普遍性趋势，只不过是同一规律在不同历史时空中的不同表现，而例外论则是“西方中心论”和以“民族国家”为核心的叙事方式所造成的必然结果，美国社会主义过于微弱并不意味着最终的失败。

The study of “American Socialist Exceptionalism” has been around for over a century and has attracted the attention of many scholars both at home and abroad.So far，under the research perspective of national history，scholars have almost exhausted all possible explanations.Research in recent decades has shown that new progress is expected to be made through adjustments in research methods.This book is an effort to explore new interpretive approaches from a global history perspective based on existing research.It examines the relevant historical facts of American socialism，elaborates on the social and historical conditions on which American socialism relied，and offers tentative explanations for the failure of the American socialist movement.The book analyzes from three levels:the world system，American society，and the socialist movement，and makes comparisons with developed capitalist countries where appropriate.The book argues that the American socialist movement，compared with Western Europe，seems to be an“exception”on the surface，but in essence，it reflects a certain universal trend of socialist movements in developed capitalist countries in the 20th century.It is just a different manifestation of the same law in different historical and spatial contexts.Exceptionalism is the inevitable result of“Western centrism”and the narrative approach centered on the“nation-state”.The weakness of American socialism does not mean ultimate failure.
