本书以马克思主义唯物史观为指导，采取定量与定性研究相结合的方法，立足于实证研究，在全面梳理国内外学界关于中世纪英格兰工资史研究线索的基础上，充分利用现有庄园账簿、法庭案卷、《劳工法令》及其执行记录等原始文献，选取工资变化、工资差别、工资收入、工资立法等主题展开论述，以探讨前工业时代雇佣劳动与雇佣关系的发展及性质，由此切入学界关于大分流的讨论，并尝试回答西方世界兴起的原因这一重大理论问题。
