本书收录了两个专题研究小册子——《户等制度史纲》和《家产继承史论》。这两个专题都属于家庭经济的范畴，因为官府税役征派单位的“户”和民间生产生活组织的“家”都是通常所说的家庭，户等制度在当时是官府征派赋税徭役的工具，过后看则是家庭经济状况的原始记录；家产继承是家庭门户的传继过程，也是家庭经济运行的重要环节。两个专题的考察路径也一样，都是以唐宋为中心前伸后延通下来的，所以就用“中国古代家庭经济研究”的名目收在一起了。
